Buenos Aires

Ports of Call Excursions: Buenos Aires

Located by the "De La Plata" River, the widest estuary in the world, Buenos Aires is the capital of the "tango", the "gaucho" and the "asado". It offers it's visitors numerous alternatives to spend nice and happy moments. In the city that never sleeps, there is time and space for everyone. Buenos Aires is a cosmopolitan city, beautiful in its layout with wide tree-lined boulevards, a combination of baroque, neo-classical and modern architecture and vast green expanses of which Palermo Park is by far the best known. It is known as one of the most elegant cities in South America; it's architecture represents the heterogeneity of it's people, the so called "porteños" (inhabitants of the port). Buenos Aires by night is a great attraction for natives and visitors: excellent restaurants of international food, German, English, Italian, French, Chinese, Japanese, etc., as well as our typical "parrillas" satisfy the most demanding gourmet. Cultural life is intense: theatres, the most outstanding is the Colon Opera House, museums, expositions offer a wide selection of cultural events.

Tour description: This is the ideal opportunity to sample a bit of traditional Argentine country life. Depart from the pier toward San Antonio de Areco, 110 kms from downtown Buenos Aires, where you will visit Los Patricios, a traditional estancia. The first owner of the estancia was Daniel de Spiller, army man of the Desert Campaign and one of the first admirals of the Argentinean Army. The present owner is his great-granddaughter, Maria Luisa de Bary de Solier de Brane. The skeleton of the house was built by the beginning of the century (1904), with a pampeano-colonial style. The garden has an English style and was designed by the French engineer Luis Goddard. It has a sport area, where tourists can practice tennis, volleyball, bowls, football, polo, swimming pool, horseback riding. It also has a track for ring races. It has big extensions dedicated to agriculture, especially dedicated to wheat, corn, sunflower and soya cultivation. Upon arrival, 6 gauchos on horses will welcome you and lead the bus to the parking place. María and Juan Brané, the owners of the estancia, will greet you and serve a snack consisting in typical empanadas and wine.
Later, see the gauchos showing their skills at:
-Mingling of two troops of horses led by a lead male: each mingling has a female horse with a bell that rings different from the other one and several horses that follow their female. When the females and males mix and then they continue in different direction, each group follows its female.
-Ring race: the ring race is done on horses, at a very high speed, trying to enter some kind of stick in a bobeche that hangs from an arc.
-Polka dance, with chairs, on horses: this is a very funny dance; there are 7 gauchos that gallop around 6 chairs with polka music. When music stops, the gauchos go down the horses to sit down on the chairs and there is always one gaucho without chair, until there is only one chair and two men playing the end of the game.
At noon, taste the famous Argentine meat in an asado. As you have your lunch see a traditional folk dances show. After lunch, enjoy the facilities of the estancia on your own: take a ride on a sulky or go horseback riding through beautiful trails or simply relax under the shade of an old tree. Try the typical mate with delicious home made pastries before returning to the pier.

- Ice cream with strawberry sauce
- Mineral water - soft drinks
