Puerto
Montt
Puerto Montt is the capital of Chile's 10th Region and was founded
in 1853 by Vicente Perez Rosales as part of a governmental colonisation
policy. Settled by German colonists in the mid-19th century, this
is one of southern Chile's most important cities. It features middle-European
architecture, with shingles, high-pitched roofs and ornate balconies.
The redwood cathedral on the city's plaza is the city's oldest building,
dating from 1856.
Along the Costanera is the Juan Pablo II Museum - commemorating
the pontiff's visit in 1987 - with a collection of artefacts from
the aboriginal cultures and the period of German colonisation in
the region. Further towards the port is the famous Angelmó handicrafts
market, where the best buy is the excellent knitwear.
Puerto Montt is the transport hub and access point to the southern
Lake District, the island of Chiloé and Chilean Patagonia. The beautiful
village-towns of Frutillar and Puerto Varas are just a stone's throw
away, as are the Petrohue Rapids. A pretty, modern city offering
a relaxed atmosphere and fabulous food.

The redwood cathedral on the city's plaza is the city's oldest building,

in Puerto Varas, the "city of roses", in front of Lake Llanquihue,
Chile's largest lake. Here take a 15 minutes walk through the main

typical roses and, across Llanquihue Lake, of the eternally snow

green countryside, past oxen and tractor plowed fields, weather
beaten clapboard barns and churches, as you skirt Lake Llanquihue.
Proceed to the little Ensenada village to reach the Petrohue Rapids,
a fabulous, dashing, gleaming succession of azure blue rapids against
a backdrop of mountains to the East. Afterwards, arrive in Petrohue,

ISLA
GRANDE DE CHILOE - A UNIQUE ISLAND
Distance to travel: 150 km (93 miles)
Duration: 9 hours
Price: $247 per person
This tour features the northern portion of the "Isla Grande de Chiloe",
South America's second largest island, after Tierra del Fuego. Some
100 miles in length and covering almost 6,500 square miles, it is
home for about 30.000 "Chilotes", a very particular blend of Spaniards
and the original Chonos indians. Agriculture and the fishing industry
are the main sources of income. Legends, such as the "Caleuche"
(we know it as the Flying Dutchman) and the "Trauco" (guilty of
every baby born to an unmarried girl) are firmly believed by these
simple but hard working people.
We depart early in the morning from the pier in Puerto Montt and
drive along the last leg of the Panamerican highway, which starts
in Alaska and ends at the southern tip of Chiloe. In a ferry, we
do the 30 minutes crossing of Chacao Channel between Pargua and
Chacao, a small farming village and port of entry to the island.
We proceed to Caulín, a fishermen village really just a street long,
facing the ocean. Here we have the chance to learn something about
oyster and mussel farming, as well as get a taste of the product
- with a glass of white wine. Our next stop will be at the town
of Ancud, where legends, traditions and handicrafts will fascinate
you. We visit the nearby Fort of San Antonio, built in 1770 to protect
the town against pirates and raiders. It was here where the last
Spanish flag of all South America flew. A visit to the colorful
market, where handicrafts, sea and agriculture products are on exhibit,
will be done before or after lunch.
Lunch will be served at Polo Sur Restaurant and the owner will be
proud to present you with a typical "pulmay" a delicious mixture
of fish, smoked pork, mussels, sausage and potatoes, all boiled
together in a huge cauldron. The resulting, invigorating, broth
is said to work miracles for gentlemen as well as ladies. Time permitting
we may visit the Archeological and Mythological Museum, before returning
via Arenas Gruesas beach and Costanera Avenue on our way to Puerto
Montt and our waiting ship.
