Wildlife Safari 4 Night Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival In Iquitos
After clearing baggage security in Iquitos Airport look for our staff,
wearing tee shirts with our logo. Introduction to your private guide.
By boat to lodge. First we travel up the Amazon River. Here we can see
many marsh birds as well as small native villages that dot the river banks.
then we go up a smaller tributary, the Tahuayo river, which leads to the
Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo reserve. We arrive at the jungle lodge by mid afternoon.
Orientation to the lodge, includes assigning cabin bungalows, research
laboratory and library, dining hall and other facilities. Our lodge was
rated as one of the "ten best wilderness lodges in the world"
by Outside Magazine.Evening excursion by boat to see caiman crocodiles
and tree boas.
Day 2 Tahuayo Lodge
Before breakfast birdwatching along riverbank environments. After breakfast
hike through forest to see manakin lek and pygmy marmoset habitat. Then
ascend into canopy onto platforms and use ziplines to travel to various
canopy platforms. Afternoon continue exploration of surrounding forest
ecosystems. Evening educational presentation of different ecosystem types
found near the lodge.
Day 3 Tahuayo Lodge
Morning visit blackwater lake to investigate this watery ecosystem. Hydrophonic
technology will be used to amplify the underwater noises made by aquatic
animals. In the afternoon we will circle the lake to see a variety of
nesting birds, then when the temperature becomes humid, swim with pink
dolphins. It was here that Sy Montgomery studied the pink dolphins to
write her two books about these fascinating freshwater mammals.
After supper evening excursion to see nocturnal birds such as boat-billed
herons, night herons, paraques, nighthawks, potoos, nightjars and owls.
Day 4 Tahuayo Lodge
Before breakfast birdwatching in varzea ecology. After breakfast hike
through forest where you native guide will identify medicinal plants.
After lunch canoe into a blackwater lake to observe monkeys, nesting hoatzin
birds and horned screamers. Evening farewell fiesta
Day 5 Tahuayo Lodge / Iquitos / Lima
Before breakfast birdwatching in a cocha (lake formed by a river meander).
Morning hike to see giant kapok trees. Monkeys may be seen along the way.
After lunch transfer to Iquitos for your return flight.
Stay
Extra Days
A great variety of activities are offered from our lodge in and around
the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserve. Examples are swimming with pink dolphins,
flying through the treetops on a canopy zipline, visiting native villages
or having a session with a native shaman, visiting manakin lek, hiking
to pygmy marmoset trees, canoeing into hoatzin rookery, etc. Every day
your guide will post a variety of day and half day trips you can choose
from. A private guide will be assigned for you to do any activity you
select. No extra charge for a private guide or for an itinerary customized
according to your pace and interests. Camping trips in the interior of
the reserve, with all gear provided or jungle survival training are also
offered for the adventurous traveler, at no extra charge.
